And I just want to play a little bit from 'Asylum' - not your typical love song. MARTIN: We're talking about how this is a love album, that was kind of the organizing theme, but you also want to kind of take it forward as in the future. But I do sometimes think, don't share everything. So it's not like I have to do it to preserve my reputation. And I know when things feel a little, like, intrusive and when they don't. LEGEND: I think I have a good gut instinct about those things. MARTIN: Do you struggle as an artist between how much to keep to yourself and how much to give away? It just was a full-circle moment that just made sense. And then, even the fact that the director of the video was the guy that introduced us seven years ago, we couldn't not put it in there. LEGEND: I felt like it was something worth sharing, you know, and it made so much sense with the song and where we shot the video and the story of the song. MARTIN: Was that a difficult decision for you? Particularly somebody who's been in the public eye for so long. Know that she's kind of known for speaking her mind. And I was curious about that because you are - I've heard the two of you talk about, in interviews, the fact that you tend to be more private, she tends to - people who follow her on Twitter. MARTIN: You even included, though, some footage from your own wedding. LEGEND: Yes, it's already been used by a few people already, even in the first month that it's been out. MARTIN: A lot of people are already saying that 'All of Me' is going to be the wedding song. But when we kind of settled on a theme and a title for the album, it made sense - having just got married, and during the time while I was making the album, I was planning to get married - to write, you know, about looking forward to a future with someone and to write about being in love and to write an ode to being in love. There's like, 80 songs that I wrote for this project. But I also wanted to take it forward, continue to make it feel fresh not just a - kind of a nostalgic music, but a music of now and of the future. And when I thought about what that meant to me, I understand the tradition that I come from, and the music that I grew up listening to. JOHN LEGEND: My only goal was to try to make a really beautiful, modern soul album. MARTIN: That was 'All of Me,' from John Legend's latest album, 'Love in the Future.' When I spoke with him recently, he told me what he was trying to achieve with this latest project.

But now he's back with a new disc of original material, titled 'Love in the Future.' But it's been a while since he's delivered a solo. His musicianship, impeccable phrasing, versatility and buttery sound have earned him nine Grammy awards. My next guest needs little introduction because John Legend is, at a young age, already an R&B legend. That level of sonic indulgence seems like it should be incompatible with an artist who is, essentially, a piano man, but Love in the Future is among Legend's best work, made for couples who are into one another for the long term while feeling a little daring and crazy.I'm Michel Martin, and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Perhaps they ensured that the whole album would have its dramatic, slightly eerie tone even the covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'Open Your Eyes' and Anita Baker's 'Angel' are a little uneasy. Kanye West, and Dave Tozer pile on as co-producers and co-executive producers. The list of producers alone includes Hit-Boy, Bink, 88 Keys, the Runners, Doc McKinney, Q-Tip, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. It's broken up by the occasional soaring arrangement or some hypnotically clanking/pinging percussion, as heard on highlight 'Made to Love,' which resembles a latter-day Moby collaboration with distant handclapping, spooky background vocals, and a sample from Lil Louis' noisy house classic 'Video Clash.' This is a heavy, laboriously made set of songs. Even the album's standard 16-track edition meanders at a crawling pace.

Legend sings with certitude, 'Pick some names, boy or girl/Then we'll change, change the world.' That sense of blissful urgency - of seizing the moment, getting lost, and knowing that the future is set - is belied in the pacing. 'The BeginningвЂ¦' sets a tone of urgency with a scene from the day after their first night spent together. Although he proposed to model Chrissy Teigen five years after meeting her, much of Love in the Future seems drawn from a romance that was quicker to bloom. Between the two releases, he recorded the Grammy-winning Wake Up! with the Roots, scored a gold single with 'Tonight (Best You Ever Had)' (from the Think Like a Man soundtrack), was featured on a couple albums' worth of songs by other artists, and somehow managed to be deeply involved in philanthropy. This is John Legend's first solo studio album since 2008's Evolver.
